The current climate of psychotherapy features complicated theories, neurobiologically-based therapies, trauma-informed practice. and a focus on internal processes, delivered by therapists collecting certifications in procedurally-driven approaches to therapy. These models invite certainty rather than curiosity, complexification rather than simplicity, and internal rather than interpersonal focus. In this presentation, Jeff will describe how curiosity, simplicity, and attention to interpersonal processes can be operationalized to create a context for client change to occur., highlighting contributions from John Weakland, Steve de Shazer, and Karl Tomm.
Led by Dr. Jeff Chang along with Esther Krohner, LMFT
Esther is a licensed therapist and international trainer with deep experience supporting couples, families, and individuals through systemic, solution-focused care. She is known for her ability to bring warmth, clarity, and creativity into complex relational dynamics. A long-time team member and associate director of the Brief Therapy Center, Esther’s approach is grounded in respect, adaptability, and empowering change—one meaningful conversation at a time.
Dr. Jeff Chang has been a Registered Psychologist in Alberta, Canada for 38 years. He is also a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. After studying many approaches to systemic therapy and working in many practice settings, for Jeff it comes down to what he learned in the 80s and 90s: patterns — what goes on between people — whether he’s doing couples therapy, supporting an unruly teen and their parents, or doing a child custody evaluation.
